Happy 1st Birthday, Sky!

=D

Well I AM a couple weeks behind in getting Sky the last part of his birthday present (good thing he’s only one and doesn’t know the difference!)  This was the main project I have been working on for his birthday, and it feels great to have it finished!

I first saw this idea on this blog, and I loved it!  I decided I HAD to make some for Sky too!  These blocks are designed to help teach him different things as he grows and learns…

Picture

A.     Family:
The main reason I created these blocks was to help Sky connect the names and faces of his family members.  Most of our family live far away, so he doesn’t see them often enough to learn who they all are and how they connect to each other and himself.  Each block has a photo of a family member on one side, to help him learn the faces of each person.

B.     Name:
On another side of the block there is the name of that person.  He can learn each name, and down the road, learn how to read them as well!

C.     Letter/Number:
There is either a letter or a number on another side of the block.  Hopefully Sky will be able to learn his ABC’s and 123’s, arrange them in order, and eventually spell words with the letters. Some of these correspond with the name of the person, but of course, it didn’t work for everyone.

D.    Animal:
There is a photo of an animal on each block, so Sky can learn many different animals, and with our help, the sounds they make.
E.   Bible Verse:
On another side of each block there is a Bible verse.  This will someday be a family activity, and we can all work on memorizing each verse.  Sky can eventually learn to put them in Biblical order and more about the Bible as he gets older.
F.   Color:
In case you hadn’t noticed, each of our blocks above coordinate in color.  That is the main way to separate each individual family.  Every family has its own color, so they are easy to connect and sort. Sky can learn his colors at the same time that he learns how each family connects.

This is another family set, using the color blue.
This project took a lot of work, but once I got into it, things felt like they went together pretty quickly.  I didn’t do it exactly the way the link above shows, but the concept is the same.  I’m really happy with the way they turned out, and I hope Sky will enjoy them for a long time!  It is much more fun making and giving hand-made gifts anyways.

Above are the rest of the blocks I finished.  As you can see, we have a large family!  My husband comes from a family of 12 children, so once more of our siblings get married and have their own kids, things might get complicated! :)  I guess I’ll just have to keep updating and changing as the family grows!  I made 44 in all, and if you noticed, 2 of the blocks above have blank sides… this is for the new additions coming this summer!

I am also thinking about taking custom block orders through
Whispers of Joy
What do you think?
Would you ever consider ordering something like this for your
child, grandchild, or other loved one?
I’d love to hear your opinions and ideas!  Comment below or send me and email and tell me what you think!

May God bless your day!

What a clever idea! And what a way for Sky to stay connected with family far away. If he learns all that off those blocks he'll be a genius:)
